During summer, and especially when on vacation, the number of people who need to rent a vehicle at their destination increases. We arrive at our summer destination by plane, train or bus and once there need a mode of transportation in which the youngest members of the family may travel safely. When contacting a car rental company, it is important to make sure that it offers us everything we need for our child to ride in the best conditions. We have spoken with the companies Europcar, Sixt and Hertz to know what they offer with regards to child road safety.
It is necessary to know what each car rental company does for child road safety, what they have available in child restraint systems and their quality standards to make a wise decision as to where to rent our vehicle. Safety is a priority.
Europcar offers CRSs for all groups, including booster seats. These may be requested through all of its sales channels (web, call center, offices…).Furthermore, most of the vehicles offered come with the Isofix system, wherefore their installation is simple. Despite this, there is not a high demand for this service. This represents merely 3 percent of all of the company's car rental services. They work with the provider Chicco.
Sixt also offers child seats for all age groups. "Our range includes the GROUP 0+ that includes newborns up to 13 kg. We also have GROUP 1 for ages weighing between 9 and 18 kg. Another alternative is GROUP 2/3 between 15 and 36 kg, or its substitute, the booster seat. There is no weight range for which a child is left without a seat adapted to his or her characteristics," they mention. All of the vehicles have the Isofix system.
The brand is Römer Britax. In addition, we outsource the supply of these seats to assure that we satisfy the demand, and guarantee that these are in line with Sixt's quality standards and image. This company is in charge of cleaning and disinfecting these seats, verifying their safety points before delivery to the client and packaging them in plastic to assure these standards through to their delivery.
This service has a special demand in tourist areas, such as the Balearic Islands and the coasts of the Spanish mainland.
"Road safety is a priority for our company," claims Javier Díaz-Laviada, General Manager of Hertz España. For this reason, one of our car rental company's main commitments is for our vehicles to "have the market's state-of-the-art child restraint systems and devices". Also, we "raise awareness among our clients on the relevance of using these devices and offer the necessary assistance for properly using them", he highlights.
The company's General Manager mentions that, fortunately, clients are increasingly more aware of the importance of correctly using child restraint systems. To this end, Hertz rented over 28,800 of these devices in Spain in 2015.According to the most recent data from 2015, the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Andalucía and Catalonia, in that order, were the communities where these were demanded the most, in line with the preceding year (2014).
In "Child Road Safety" we have attempted to contact with other car rental companies to know their level of implication with child restraint systems, but have not received a response in time for inclusion in this article.
