Gastroesophogeal reflux means that the stomach is returning its content back up into the esophagus. This is very typical in breastfeeding babies and a lot of people also experience reflux as adults.

It can become a cause of concern for parents although the vast majority of cases of gastroesophogeal reflux are nothing to worry about and do not need to be treated with medication.

However, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a more serious and long-lasting type of reflux. The most typical GERD symptom in children and adolescents is heartburn. It can last up to two hours and tends to worsen after meals. GERD can cause problems during and after feeding in breastfeeding babies and small children:

When putting a baby with GERD to bed after eating or settling them in their car seat, the symptoms can worsen. Furthermore, some children suffer from complications because constant gastric acid reflux can cause breathing difficulties, reddening and irritation of the esophagus, including bleeding, among other complications.

This is why it is a good idea for the child to remain in an upright position whenever possible, following meals. Half an hour should be long enough. When traveling by car the harnesses could potentially be pressing on the child's stomach and temporarily aggravating the symptoms. A reclined posture, towards an upright position, is the best option.

In the vast majority of cases there is no need to take any other precautions other than those we have already discussed: waiting a reasonable amount of time before putting the child in the child car seat and not lying the child down.
