13/11/2018

One in thirteen newborn babies in Spain is born prematurely, according to the Parents of Premature Babies Association (APREM). Furthermore, the percentage of children being born prematurely has increased by 36% between 1996 and 2013 (according to the INE (Spanish Statistical Office)).

The are a number of causes of prematurity although some of the determining factors are considered to be assisted reproduction techniques, multiple births, work-related stress, health problems of the mother and delayed motherhood Apart from being born prematurely, these babies are at a greater risk of developing health problems, the seriousness of which will depend to a large part on how premature they are.

These babies can suffer serious consequences such as, for example, sensory deficit, cerebral palsy, respiratory infections or chronic diseases. Moreover, the development of these babies' immune systems is not fully developed, therefore they are prone to infections that can quickly become serious, and they can have underdeveloped respiratory and digestive systems.

Precautions to take in order to travel safely by car with premature babies

Premature babies, as a result of what we have discussed earlier, cannot remain seated in a car seat for extended periods of time. Since they may be suffering from respiratory problems or have muscle weakness impeding them from being able to breathe in an unnatural position this is a risk which a doctor should assess when the patients are leaving the maternity ward.

It is crucial, firstly, to discuss this with a pediatrician in order to be sure that the child can travel safely by car, or for any other doubts that the parents might have in their first few days after leaving the hospital.

We should establish a maximum time limit of an hour in the child car seat, and should also recline the backrest as much as we can so that the baby is lying as flat as possible.

Children must of course be traveling This is a general rule for all young children but especially for premature babies). An adult should sit next to them on the rear seats, above all to ensure that they are fine and to be able to keep an eye on them.

You should only use a baby carrier for trips by car, while for anything else you should choose a suitable stroller for your child. This is very important, given that car seats are not usually suitable for transporting a child outside the vehicle.
